Ceist:

119 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of full-time clerical/ administrative staff in the livestock section of his Department in 1993; and the number from 1 January to 31 March 1994.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 117, 118 and 119 together.

In 1993, the total number of full time clerical/administrative staff assigned to livestock duties in my Department, other than the special beef premium unit, was 247. The special beef premium unit commenced operation in June 1993 and at 31 December 1993, the total clerical/administrative staff in the unit was 87. In addition, 14 staff were transferred temporarily from other sections of my Department to the livestock sections during the year.

My Department also recruited twenty-four temporary staff to assist in the payment of beef premia for four to five weeks during that period at a salary cost of £18,579.54.

The total number of fulltime clerical/administrative staff engaged in livestock duties in the first three months of this year had increased to 362. This figure includes 17 staff on loan from other sections of my Department. An additional 15 temporary staff were engaged on short term contracts during this period. The total cost of salaries paid for the engagement of these temporary staff was £20,322.14.
The system used by my Department for recording overtime does not facilitate the compilation of amounts spent on individual schemes. Of a total amount of £1.7 million spent on overtime to all clerical/administrative staff in 1993, an estimated £.9 million approximately was paid for overtime on livestock duties. It is estimated that of the £.62 million paid in overtime to administrative staff in the period 1 January to 31 March 1994, £.4 million was related to livestock duties.
