Vol. 441 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

142 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will increase the remote area grant offered to a person (details supplied) in County Cork in view of the fact that the withdrawal of school bus transport is an inconvenience and an extra financial cost.

I regret that it is not open to me to offer the increase sought by the Deputy as grants offered towards the cost of private transport arrangements in lieu of transport under the scheme are set at fixed rates.

The terms of the school transport scheme required that the service from the area in question be withdrawn when only three eligible children were left offering for transport from that area.

After the withdrawal of the service in December last my Department offered a remote area grant to the family in the area who lived a minimum of three miles from the school.
