Vol. 442 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Durkan — the reason for the failure by the Minister for Health to address the problems affecting the sexual assault unit at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin 1, with particular reference to the need for staffing and other facilities; (2) Deputy Ellis — the closure of Wessel Industries Limited, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim, and the consequent loss of 42 jobs; (3) Deputy Bradford — the Government's proposals for the future of Irish Steel; (4) Deputy Allen — the reported remarks in the Daily Mail of Monday, 25 April to the effect that Irish people flock across the Irish Sea in great numbers to exploit the British social welfare system which they regard as a patriotic duty; (5) Deputy Rabbitte — the reported plan by the National Australia Bank to acquire the Trustee Savings Bank; the Government attitude to this plan in the light of the requirements of the Trustee Savings Bank Act, 1989; and the implications of any such takeover for the commitment in the Programme for Partnership Government to the development of a vigorous third banking force; (6) Deputy Yates — the Government attitude to reports of the sale of the Trustee Savings Bank to the National Irish Bank and whether such sale should be conducted through competitive tendering; (7) Deputy Mitchell — the continuing serious problem of illegal moneylending and the way in which continuing restrictions on the help community welfare officers may provide with rent and ESB arrears and other matters is worsening the problem; (8) Deputy Harney — the action to be taken to reassure German consumers of the safety of Irish beef; and the involvement of the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry in the study by the EU Commission of additional safeguards to boost consumer confidence in beef.

The matters raised by the following have been selected for discussion: Deputies Rabbitte; Yates; Ellis and Mitchell.
