Vol. 442 No. 1
84 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authority houses in Cork City that are without bathrooms; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Figures provided by Cork Corporation indicate that, at 31 December 1993, some 400 of their dwellings lacked bathroom facilities.
The management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings, including the provision of bathroom facilities, are the responsibility of local authorities. In order to assist authorities to instal bathrooms-showers in their dwellings which lack them, funding is provided under the bathrooms programme operated by my Department. In addition, bathrooms can be provided as part of refurbishment projects under my Department's remedial works scheme. The allocations made to the corporation have increased from £3.7 million in 1993 to £4.745 million this year to bring the total amount provided to them to date to £26.630 million under both of these schemes.
