Ceist:

88 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance if a termination date has been set for the termination and completion of the Lung/Bonnacht drainage scheme.

Ceist:

89 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the total number of bridges originally scheduled under the Lung/Bonnacht drainage scheme on which work was to be carried out; and the total number of bridges on which work has been carried out to date.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 87, 88 and 89 together.

The rivers to which the Deputy refers are not clearly identifiable. Accordingly, I have assumed that the drainage scheme being alluded to is the Boyle catchment drainage scheme, CDS, of which the River Lung is a tributary.

Of the 853 bridges scheduled for works, 356 were completed up to the end of 1993. In April 1994 there are nine excavators working on the Boyle scheme; in April 1993 there were 11 in operation. In April, 1994 there are 13 machine drivers and 66 other industrial staff employed; in April, 1993 there were 14 drivers and 70 other industrial staff.

Progress of work on the Boyle CDS and its cost, is monitored continuously in conjunction with the Department of Finance. It is not possible to state precisely when this scheme will terminate.
