Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

210 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the number of EEC, EC and EU directives which have come to his Department since Ireland joined the European Community.

My Department is responsible for the transposition of the following two directives into Irish Law — 89/48/EEC and 92/51/EEC dealing with the mutual recognition of higher education diplomas.

Directive 89/48/EEC concerned a general system for the mutual recognition of higher education qualifications awarded on completion of professional education and training of at least three years duration. This directive was fully transposed into Irish Law by Statutory Instrument No. 1 of 1991 signed by the Minister for Education on 2 January 1991 in accordance with the European Communities Act, 1972.

Directive 92/51/EEC is a complementary directive on the general recognition of lower level qualifications and is due for transposition into Irish Law by 18 June 1994.
