37 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment the number of travellers who have been paid the £1,500 special grant towards a first house for their own occupation; and the number of applications on hand for the increased £3,000 grant.
My Department recoups local authorities the full cost of the grants paid by them to traveller families purchasing a house for the first-time for their own occupation. In the period 1986 to 1993, 25 grants of £1,500 have been recouped; information on the number recouped in years prior to 1986 is not readily available. One claim from a local authority for recoupment of a £1,500 grant will be paid shortly; no claim is on hands in the Department in respect of the increased £3,000 grant.
