Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Speed Control Ramps.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

55 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding the installation of speed control ramps on public roads and public rights-of-way.

Section 101A of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, provides that road authorities may provide ramps on roadways for the purpose of restricting the speed of mechanically propelled vehicles. The Road Traffic (Bollards and Ramps) Regulations, 1988 set out the detailed requirements relating to the provision of ramps.

The Road Traffic Act, 1994, which was enacted on 20 April last, provides for the repeal of section 101A and its replacement by a new general power for road authorities to provide such traffic calming measures, including ramps, as they consider desirable on public roads in their charge. I will commence the relevant provisions of the 1994 Act as soon as practicable.
