Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Landfill Sites.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

123 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the progress, if any, which has been made in the EU with regard to directives on landfill of waste; the submission Ireland has made on the subject; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A proposal for a Council Directive on the landfill of waste is now before the Environment Council with a view to the adoption of a common position. Ireland, in common with a number of other member states, has expressed the view that the proposal should be modified to provide greater flexibility in relation to the timescale for the upgrading of existing landfill sites and to the regulation of small-scale landfills. Amendments covering these matters have been proposed by the Presidency and are among the matters now under negotiation.
