Vol. 443 No. 5

Written Answers. - Processing of Passports.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

59 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the processing time required in the issuing of a passport in June 1992 and June 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Passport issuing time varies depending on whether the application is by post or in person and on a number of other factors, including for example the degree of urgency involved. Prior to the introduction of the new computer system in the Passport Office in September 1993 many of the processes involved in issuing a passport were manually based and the detailed statistics necessary to respond acurately to the Deputy's question were not maintained. It would not be practicable, having regard to the time available and the inordinate commitment of staff time and resources that would be involved, to compile the information requested at this stage.
