Vol. 443 No. 6

Written Answers. - Speech and Language Training Facilities.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

62 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the North Eastern Health Board has presented to his Department a report urging the setting up of language units in the North Eastern Health Board area to meet the needs of nearly a hundred children with speech and language disorders; if he will make a statement outlining his views on the matter; and if these language units will be set up as soon as possible.

I am aware of proposals from the North Eastern Health Board for the establishment of speech and language units in consultation with the Department of Education. In this regard I am at present considering an application from the board for the appointment of two speech therapists in the context of developments in 1994 for people with physical or sensory disability. I hope to be in a position to give a decision on the application shortly.
