Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - Closure of Barracks.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

52 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the army barracks that have been closed recently or are scheduled for closure; the future proposals, if any, for such barracks; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have no plans at the present time regarding the closure of any military barracks, other than Collins Baracks, Dublin. This matter is, however, being kept under review taking account of, inter alia, the strategic spread of existing barracks and posts and the necessity to maintain security and operational efficiency.

Griffith Barracks, Dublin was closed in 1988 and was sold in 1991. The old military barracks in Cavan was closed in 1990 and it has recently been sold. The troops stationed at the military post at Cootehill, County Cavan were re-located in 1990 to the new barracks in Cavan and to Monaghan Barracks and the premises at Cootehill, which was held in lease, was surrendered to the owners. The military post at Fort Dunree, Country Donegal was closed in 1990. The old Fort, which incorporated a military museum, was handed over to Donegal County Council for tourism purposes and the balance of the property was sold. Fort Camden, County Cork and Fort Duncannon, County Wexford were also vacated in recent years and were handed over to Cork County Council and Wexford County Council respectively for tourism purposes.
