Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - National School Staffing.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

76 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if a teacher, who is retiring at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 12, will be replaced in view of the special circumstances of the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. In the case of the school referred to by the Deputy there were 152 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1993, which warrants a staff of principal plus four assistants for the 1993-94 school year. The school will also have the services of a full-time remedial teacher and a concessionary teacher under the special scheme of teaching assistance for schools serving designated areas of disadvantage.

The staffing of the school, which was established following an amalgamation in 1981, has benefited from an amalgamation concession. Amalgamated schools are allowed to replace teachers who leave within one year of the amalgamation. In the case of a teacher who leaves after one year, a replacement is allowed only if the enrolment figure on the previous 30 September warrants it. A member of the staff of that school is retiring voluntarily on 31 August 1994. However the school's enrolment on 30 September 1993 does not warrant that teacher's replacement.
