Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - UCC Places.

Séamus Hughes

Ceist:

148 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Education the reason the number of places available to students who wish to do the higher diploma in education at University College, Galway in 1994 is approximately half of that available in 1993; the number that will be available in 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The provision of places for specific courses in individual universities is a matter for the Higher Education Authority.

In relation to the total provision to be made for postgraduate teacher training in 1994, I have already indicated in replies to recent questions that the number will be 980. These replies have also indicated that this figure represents a reduction of 47 on the total number of places for postgraduate training in 1993 and an increase of over 200 for 1991 and 1992 and is a significant increase for all of the previous years back to 1988.

The number of places to be provided in 1995 will be determined following a review of the operation of the quota system in 1994 by a committee representative of the Committee of Heads of Irish Universities, the Higher Education Authority and my Department.
