Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Acid Rain Damage.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

63 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment if he will have a study carried out to ascertain the damage being caused to buildings and wildlife by acid rain; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

, (Wexford): National and international research indicates a relatively low level of acid precipitation in Ireland, with correspondingly limited environmental impact on buildings and the natural environment.

Analysis of acid rain incidence and effects in Ireland is contained in two reports of the Environmental Research Unit: Air Quality in Ireland (published in 1993) and Acid Sensitive Surface Waters in Ireland (published in 1991); both are available in the Oireachtas Library.
The Environmental Protection Agency have now assumed responsibility for the co-ordination of environmental monitoring and research and will, as part of this function, consider the need for updating of studies in this area.
