Vol. 444 No. 2

Written Answers. - Temporary Teacher Post.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

61 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction an extra temporary post for St. Senan's boys' national school, Kilrush, County Clare, for the 1994-95 academic year, to ensure the continuation of the special class for the mildly mentally handicapped pending the proposed amalgamation of primary schools in the town.

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolment of St. Senan's boys' national school on 30 September 1993 was 210 pupils which warrants a staffing in the 1994-95 school year of a principal and six assistants. In addition, the school has the services of a remedial teacher on a full-time basis and an additional assistant for pupils enrolled in a special class which caters for mildly mentally handicapped children.

As the school has its full compliment of staff by reference to the agreement on staffing entered into between the Government and the INTO, it is not possible to sanction the appointment of a temporary teacher at this stage.

The seventh assistant's post will be suppressed at the end of the current school year. The teacher in question has been placed on the diocesan panel for redeployment. My Department has no plans to phase out the special class in the school.
