Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - Developing the West Together Report.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

116 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the consideration, if any, he has given to the recommendations in the report, Developing the West Together, in so far as they relate to matters for which he and agencies under his control are responsible; and the outcome of that consideration.

The Government considered the report of the task force set up to advise on the recommendations contained in the document A Crusade for Survival. On 28 April 1994, the Government issued a statement, detailing the action which would be taken in response. The Government noted that the implementation process in respect of the vast majority of the sectoral recommendations contained in the task force report was ongoing as part of existing sectoral policies or was planned as part of the measures to be undertaken under the next round of EU Structural Funds.

In relation to the specific remit of my Department and its agencies, the statement noted that both Forbairt and the county enterprise boards would direct their efforts towards the continued development of indigenous industry in the west and would place particular emphasis on the role of small business-industry in that development. The statement also noted that IDA Ireland would continue to promote the west as a location for mobile international investment and would also assist the expansion of existing overseas companies in the region and the development of linkages between those firms and indigenous industry.

My Department and the development agencies are currently pursuing the policies set out above.
