Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fertility Drugs Use.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

440 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if he will be issuing guidelines on the use of fertility drugs in view of recent research suggesting that repeated use of such drugs may substantially increase the risk of ovarian cancer. [651/94]

Guidelines on the use of any medical preparation, including fertility drugs, are approved by the National Drugs Advisory Board and form part of the conditions under which the individual medical preparations are granted product authorisations. I am advised that neither the National Drugs Advisory Board nor specialists in the field consulted by it are aware of any recent research suggested by the Deputy nor of any reason to change the existing guidelines in relation to fertility drugs. I would point out that all such products are kept under constant review. Should a need arise to change existing guidelines, this will be done.
