Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Government of Schools.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

60 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education if she can arrive at a consensus on the governance of schools in the aftermath of the discussions with the various interested parties; if she will give details of her preferred course of direction; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1051/94]

In July, I issued a position paper on the governance of schools outlining illustrative models for boards of management in all schools, based on the principles of plurality, partnership and accountability. A two day meeting involving the concerned interests was held in September. I am now carefully considering the outcome of the meeting.

The process of multi-lateral dialogue involves each of the interested parties setting out their position, giving consideration to the position of others and perhaps revising their own position as a result. The aim of this dialogue is to give the partners in education the collective opportunity to consider the issues raised, to develop on areas of agreement. I am confident, given the very constructive nature of the debate to date and the very high level of engagement among the partners with the issues, that the issuing of the paper and the ensuing debate will greatly facilitate both myself, as Minister, and the Government in finalising proposals on these key issues.
