Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Schools/College.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

75 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the need for additional accommodation at St. Laurence's Community College, Drogheda, County Louth, in view of her Department's decision not to utilise the available site of the former Robert Ushers Textile Plant and the excellent accommodation available on that site; if she will give sanction for the purchase of a suitable site for the building of a new college on the north side of the town; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [248/94]

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

123 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for rectifying the problems at post-primary schools in Drogheda, County Louth; if she will set in train plans for a new VEC school in the town; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [345/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 75 and 123 together.

I am aware that Town of Drogheda Vocational Education Committee sought sanction from my Department to purchase additional accommodation for St. Laurence's College at the former Robert Ushers Textile Plant. Sanction was refused as it was considered that the accommodation in question was unsuitable for school use.

A major evaluation of the post-primary accommodation needs of the schools in Drogheda, has been completed by the planning section of my Department. The report will be available to me within a matter of days. I will then be in a position to make a decision on the future requirements of the schools in the centre, including St. Laurence's College.
