Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Pig Industry Assistance.

Michael Finucane

Ceist:

101 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the current position regarding the special concessions which have been submitted to the EU to help finance pig producers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1200/94]

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

104 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the current position in relation to the promised funding to assist the pig industry through CBF; if commitments made earlier this year will be fully honoured in view of the financial plight of many pig producers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1239/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 101 and 104 together.

On 22 April 1994, I announced a package of measures to assist the pigmeat industry, including the provision of additional resources for CBF to intensify their pigmeat promotion programme.

In response to an inquiry from the EU Commission, details of that package were notified to them so that they could satisfy themselves that the measures were in compliance with EU law on State aids. The Commission's formal response is awaited.
