Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Exportation of Live Cattle.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

105 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the action, if any, he is taking to ensure the continuation of live exports of cattle to the Continent; in particular if his attention has been drawn to the fact that live export has been the lifeline of the smaller farmer and those in the West and North-West; and the position with regard to this matter. [1249/94]

The present position in regard to exportation of live cattle to the Continent is that the capacity for this trade has been reduced due to the withdrawal of certain ferry operators from this business.

I am well aware of the importance of the live trade to farmers throughout the country and I will continue to do everything possible to maintain these exports. I will be working closely with my EU colleagues on the review of legislation on the transport of animals and other welfare related issues. It is hoped that revised legislation will enable shipping companies to reconsider their position. The question of alternative methods of transport is also being examined.
