Vol. 445 No. 9

Written Answers. - Copyright Law.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

155 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the present position with regard to copyright law of Irish composers, Irish performers and Irish record companies in view of the new GATT Agreements. [1362/94]

My Department is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of all aspects of copyright legislation in Ireland. In that context the GATT Agreement on the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) is being examined closely as, indeed, are recent EU Directives in this area and developments in other international fora such as the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The likely impact on Irish composers, performers and record companies arising from all of these international developments is being fully assessed.

Upon completion of the review comprehensive legislation will be drafted and brought forward which will deal with all of the issues raised during the course of this indepth analysis.
