Vol. 445 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Galway Water Supply.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

161 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding the provision of a water supply scheme to Palmerstown/ Lisheenkyle and Knocknacreavagh in the Derrydonnell/Athenry area of County Galway in view of the fact that the local water supply has been found unfit for human consumption. [1356/94]

The provision of a water supply to these areas is dependent on the development of the Caherfinisker group water scheme. This is a large, high-cost scheme requiring upsized trunk mains in order to facilitate projected downstream demand.

The question of funding for this scheme, and for water and sewerage services projects generally, has been considered in the context of the resources available under the National Development Plan. The high level of existing commitments and the demands of schemes already prioritised for investment account for all finance available to the water services programme at present. It is not therefore possible to provide funding for this scheme at this stage. The position will, however, be regularly reviewed during the period of the National Development Plan.
