Vol. 446 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tourist Information Offices.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

114 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade in respect of measure number two in his proposals for tourism development, the reason no improved tourism office is to be sited in County Mayo in view of the fact that there are three proposed for County Galway, two for County Kerry and one each for Dublin, Boyne Valley and Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter in view of the Government's proposal to spread the economic benefits of tourist development over the entire country. [1698/94]

The locations mentioned for new or improved Tourist Information Offices in the Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-1999, are not comprehensive. They only indicate where a need has already been identified by Bord Fáilte for new or improved facilities.

Under the programme, all regional tourism organisations will have an opportunity to submit proposals for the upgrading of the tourism information network in their particular region. The function of identifying priorities will rest with the product management board which will be responsible for assessing all grant applications. I will not have any function in this regard.
