Vol. 446 No. 1

Written Answers. - All-Irish Schools Ownerships.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

136 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the owners of all-Irish schools at primary and post-primary level and the way in which this differs from ownership of denominational or voluntary schools since the full cost of site and of building all-Irish schools is borne by the State. [1683/94]

My Department fully grant aids the provision of a site and permanent accommodation for All-Irish primary schools where such schools have been given permanent recognition and where no alternative permanent accommodation is available for those schools. A standard lease for these schools has not yet been developed and accordingly the site and property remain for the present in the full ownership of the State.

Denominational and other schools at primary level provide the site for the school building and the relevant local contribution towards the school structure. The State's interest in such schools is safeguarded under the terms of a standard lease to which the Minister for Education is a party.

All vocational education committee schools including All-Irish Schools under their control are owned by the Vocational Educational Committees in accordance with the Vocational Education Act 1930 and receive the same level of State funding. Similarly, recognised All-Irish Secondary Schools received capital grants in the same way as mainstream secondary schools. All community and comprehensive schools are provided by the State and are vested in trustees under a standard Deed of Trust/Indenture. This provides for reversion to the Minister on expiry of the term of the lease or on the school ceasing to operate.
