Vol. 446 No. 4

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business proper, I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Gay Mitchell. I now call on the Deputy to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I wish to give you notice of my request to adjourn the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to debate a matter of urgent public importance, namely, a motion to seek an explanation from the Minister for Justice as to why she told the Dáil yesterday that the request for the extradition of a wanted paedophile offender to Northern Ireland was not examined or seen by the Attorney General, despite being with his office for seven months, if, as she stated, the case was vital to the operation of the extradition code following the amendment of the 1987 extradition legislation and why she considers it was vital since the amending legislation dealt with political not sexual offences.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
