I am satisfied that the Animal Remedies Act, 1993, provides an adequate framework to combat the illegal use of growth promoters. My Department has in place an extensive regime of testing for illegal residues. My policy in relation to the illegal use, possession and distribution of animal remedies is clearcut. In each case, where the evidence warrants prosecution, those involved in breaking the law will be pursued vigorously through the courts.
Since the Act came into force on 1 October 1993, three persons have been convicted of offences under the Act and fines totalling £3,950 imposed, while 14 other cases alleging offences under the Act have been referred to the office of the chief state solicitor with a view to prosecution. A further 36 cases alleging breaches of the Act are currently under investigation.
