Vol. 446 No. 7

Written Answers. - Care of Elderly.

James Leonard

Ceist:

179 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Health his views on whether there is scope for part-time employment in caring for old people in their own homes as this would result in a reduction in institutionalisation of our old people. [2919/94]

Since the publication of the report, The Years Ahead, the main focus of policy for the elderly has been the development of community based services so elderly persons can continue to live in their own homes, with assistance if necessary, for as long as possible.

The recommendations of the report are being progressively implemented. In recent years health boards have employed many new staff, including nurses, home care attendants, paramedics and home helps to care for elderly people living at home. It should be noted that many of these staff, particularly home helps are employed on a part time basis. It is my intention to employ more staff as resources permit.

I would also like to point out that the Carer's Allowance which is administered by the Department of Social Welfare is payable to people who give full time care to an elderly relative and who have no other source of income.
