Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - FÁS Courses.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

158 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will examine the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 so to ensure that she and persons in similar situations get a fair opportunity on FÁS courses. [3501/94]

Community Employment is geared towards persons who are either 21 years of age or over and in receipt of unemployment assistance or who are in receipt of unemployment benefit or lone parent's allowance for over one year. In addition, persons registered with the National Rehabilitation Board are also eligible to participate.

The rationale is that expenditure on the programme is partially offset by savings in social welfare payments. Accordingly, I have no plans to alter the eligibility criteria to include persons signing on for credits.

The position regarding the person referred to in the question is, of course, a day-to-day matter for FÁS.
