Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Martin Cullen

Ceist:

39 Mr. Cullen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the EU Directives that remain to be transposed into domestic law; and the plans, if any, he has to do so. [1441/95]

The implementation of directives is the responsibility of each Minister concerned with the subject area covered by the directive.

No directives requiring transposition under EC law have arisen in the area of responsibility of my Department. If the Deputy requires information on the implementation of specific directives he should seek the information from the relevant Ministers.
All Departments are, of course, fully aware of the importance which the Government attaches to the transposition of EC directives. A Government decision of 1 March 1994 endorsed recommendations to improve Ireland's transposition record drawn up by a subgroup of the interdepartmental European Co-ordination Committee. The central recommendation was that all Departments should treat transposition with much greater urgency. I am glad to say that there was a significant improvement in the situation subsequent to that Government decision.
