Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Reopening of Aghalane Bridge.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

59 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs when the bridge at Ballinarea (Collins) between County Monaghan and County Armagh will be replaced. [1374/95]

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

63 Mr. B. Smith asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the progress that has been made in relation to the reopening of Aghalane Bridge; the steps, if any, he will take to ensure that this project is progressed as quickly as possible in view of the importance of this border crossing for the economic and social life of Belturbet and its environs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1451/95]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 59 and 63 together.

I have emphasised to the British authorities the importance of ensuring that all closed roads, including bridges, are reopened as soon as possible. I understand that close consultations in this regard are taking place between the two Departments of the Environment, and that substantial progress has been made towards reopening previously closed crossings. I will continue to monitor the situation closely so as to ensure that progress is maintained.

As regards the reopening of Aghalane Bridge, which in addition to reconstruction of the bridge will involve extensive road improvement works, I understand that the necessary planning and design work is now well underway. I will use every opportunity, including contact with the British authorities and with my colleague the Minister for the Environment, to encourage the rapid completion of this important project.

With regard to the bridge at Ballinarea I understand that design work for the project, which is the responsibility of the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland, is being carried out at present. I understand from the Northern authorities that building work is expected to commence in the second half of this year and will take five to six months to complete. I will continue to press for the completion of work on this bridge at the earliest possible date.
