Limerick East): General practitioners participating in the general medical services scheme are independent contractors. Accordingly, the question of granting public service pensions to such doctors does not arise.
As part of the 1989 general medical services agreement, otherwise known as the capitation contract, a superannuation scheme for participating general practitioners was introduced. This scheme, which is administered by the Irish Medical Organisation, is funded by way of a contribution by health boards of 10 per cent of total capitation fees. In addition, participating general practitioners contribute 5 per cent to the scheme, which sum is deducted from their capitation payments.
