Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

144 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education her views on the submission made by Our Lady of Benada secondary school, Benada Abbey, Turlestrane, Co. Sligo, for an ex-quota remedial teacher; in view of the needs of the school for provision of an ex-quota trained remedial teacher and the demands on the school's fund-raising activities in the rural farming catchment area of County Sligo in seeking to cope with these problems within its own resources, if she will sanction the remedial teacher in time for the 1995-96 school year. [3264/95]

A total of 277 ex-quota remedial posts have been allocated to post-primary schools in the current school year. I am glad to inform the Deputy that provision has been made for the allocation of an additional 76 ex-quota remedial posts to post-primary schools in the 1995-96 school year. The position of this school will be considered when the additional posts are being allocated.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

145 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to an application on behalf of Drumshanbo national school and from other national schools in the area for a remedial teacher and, in view of the special circumstances of the area, if she will allocate the required teacher for the commencement of the next school year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3280/95]

I am aware that the schools in question have applied for a remedial teaching service. As I recently announced, I intend to allocate an additional 55 remedial teacher posts to the primary school sector in 1995. These posts will be allocated on the basis of priority of need following collection and analysis of data from primary schools by my Department's primary inspectorate. The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
