Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teachers' PRSI.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

177 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Social Welfare the rate of PRSI paid by teachers; and the benefits, if any, which can be obtained from these payments.[2894/95]

Teachers who are employed in a permanent and pensionable capacity and covered under the superannuation scheme are insurable at the modified rate of PRSI under Class D. The teacher's share of the contribution is 3.15 per cent which consists of a 0.9 per cent social insurance element payable to a ceiling of £20,900; a 1.25 per cent health contribution and the 1 per cent employment and training levy payable on all earnings. Under Class D the employer's share of PRSI is 2.35 per cent up to a ceiling of £25,800.

PRSI contributions at Class D give cover for social welfare survivor's contributory pension, orphan's contributory allowance, deserted wife's benefit and occupational injuries benefits.
