Ceist:

220 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of officers of the Permanent Defence Force who are in receipt of mileage allowances; excluding children's allowances, uniform allowance and military service allowance, the number of officers who are in receipt of allowances; the number of officers of the Permanent Defence Force; the allowances paid; and the amount paid in 1994. [3275/95]

The number of commissioned officers serving in the Permanent Defence Force as at 31 December 1994 was 1,558. Of these, 88 officers were in receipt of commuted car allowance as holders of certain appointments and 110 officers, employed on duties with the FCA and Slua Muirí, were in receipt of mileage allowance in respect of the use of their private cars on official business. In addition a number of officers were paid mileage allowance in respect of the use of their private cars for particular authorised official journeys.

Officers are entitled to allowances in accordance with Defence Forces regulations and the number of officers in receipt of allowances varies from time to time.

The main allowances and the amount paid in respect of officers in 1994 were as follows:—
