Vol. 449 No. 2

Written Answers. - Representations to British Authorities.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

42 Mr. Gregory asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to the British authorities to enable a person (details supplied) speak to his family in the Irish language in the same way as other nationalities are permitted to communicate in their national language; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3501/95]

I am aware of the case in question, and have instructed that the difficulties which have arisen regarding communications in the Irish language between the prisoner concerned and his family should be raised with the British authorities. I have emphasised to the British authorities the importance of facilitating contact between prisoners and their families, and urged the need for a flexible approach in cases such as this so as to ensure that any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum. I also arranged that the prisoner concerned should be visited by an official of the Embassy in London, and the Embassy continues to keep the situation in this case under close review. I am hopeful that it will be possible to find a resolution to the problems which have arisen, and will be monitoring progress closely in the period ahead.
