Vol. 449 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Economic and Social Forum.

Martin Cullen

Ceist:

18 Mr. Cullen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the work currently being undertaken by the National Economic and Social Forum; and the Government's view of the Forum's work. [2794/95]

As the Deputy will be aware, the National Economic and Social Forum was established in June 1993 to develop economic and social policy initiatives, particularly in relation to combating unemployment. I am delighted with the work that the Forum has produced since it was established 18 months ago. Over that period of time, it has produced five reports:

— Negotiations on a successor agreement to the Programme for Economic and Social Progress (November, 1993).

— National Development Plan 1994-1999 — the proposed Local Development Programme (November 1993).

— Commission on Social Welfare — Outstanding Recommendations (January 1994).
— Ending Long-Term Unemployment (June 1994).
— Income Maintenance Strategies (July 1994).
These reports have been given very careful consideration by Government and have and will continue to make an important contribution to the development of policy. A further report on the quality delivery of social services will be published shortly. The Forum is currently working on a report dealing with the jobs potential of the services sector and it is expected that this will be completed over the next few months.
The Government looks forward to receiving this report in due course.
