Vol. 449 No. 6

Written Answers. - UN Children's Fund.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

47 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the level of Government funding in each of the years 1993 to 1995 to the United Nations Children's Fund; if he has satisfied himself with the Irish contribution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4161/95]

The level of Government funding to the United Nations Children's Fund — UNICEF — in 1993 and 1994 was as follows: 1993, £600,000 and 1994, £750,000.

The figure for 1995 has not yet been allocated but it will show an increase on the 1994 figure.

Ireland's contribution to UNICEF was reduced substantially in the late 1980s since when we have been endeavouring to increase the contribution to a level which would reflect the importance of UNICEF's work in promoting the welfare of children throughout the world, particularly in developing countries and countries which have been subjected to the effects of war and other calamities.

Ireland's contribution to UNICEF this year will compare favourably with that of many of our EU partners on aper capita basis.
As well as our annual contributions, Ireland frequently channels emergency funding for specific purposes through UNICEF.
