Written Answers. - Defence Forces' Bank Accounts.

Ceist:

240 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence, in respect of PDF and Reserve Units, the number of bank accounts maintained; the number of associated and other banks used for the purposes of these accounts; and if he will make a statement indicating the necessity for the use of so many banks. [4587/95]

Thirty-five bank accounts are operated by the Department in respect of the Defence Forces. These accounts are required to facilitate the remuneration of military personnel and the local purchase of stores.

In addition, 129 bank accounts are maintained by units of the Reserve Defence Force. These accounts are availed of for the administration of units' funds, which in the main comprise annual grants to meet ongoing expenditure in accordance with Defence Force regulations. One hundred and fifty-six of the banks accounts are held with the associated banks, five accounts are held with non-associated banks and three accounts with overseas banks.
