Ceist:

74 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the symptoms of microwave illness are identical to those of ME or chronic fatigue syndrome. [5032/95]

Limerick East): I will take Questions Nos. 73 and 74 together. Myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome and “yuppie 'flu” is a chronic debilitating disease that is marked in the majority of cases by sudden onset of fatigue and `flu-like symptoms. The symptoms associated with microwave and radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation, in addition to `flu-like symptoms, include burning of the skin and eye problems.

Because the recognition of ME as a type of syndrome is relatively recent, it is not possible to ascertain the prevalence of the condition and whether it is increasing. There is significant research being carried out in relation to this condition involving a wide range of disciplines which reflects the multi-factorial nature of the problem and the difficulty in finding a cause.

Treatment is non-specific and is aimed at alleviating symptoms and helping patients to adjust to the chronic nature of the condition. People with ME can avail of services provided in the normal course of health service provision through the health boards. A general practitioner provides personal, primary and continuing care to individual patients and families. In relation to medical conditions generally, including ME, a general practitioner will be concerned with prevention and anticipatory care as well as an effective response to illness and patient rehabilitation.
