Vol. 450 No. 7

Written Answers. - Badger Population Survey.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

44 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if a national survey or count of the badger population was carried out in recent years on behalf of the Office of Public Works; if so, the findings of this count as regards the present estimated badger population in the country; if a report was prepared on the population of the badgers infected by tuberculosis in conjunction with this survey or count; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5703/95]

A major research study was initiated in 1989 provide information on the ecology, distribution and abundance of the badger in this country. A draft report on the research, entitled "The Badger and Habitat Survey of Ireland", has been prepared together with an executive summary. I understand that the National Parks and Wildlife Service will shortly submit the summary to me prior to arranging for its publication.

I am informed that while the study did not provide for a report on the numbers of badgers infected by tuberculosis the draft report will be of direct relevance to studies assessing the role of the badger in the transmission of bovine tuberculosis.
