Vol. 450 No. 7

Written Answers. - Carrick-on-Shannon (Leitrim) Bridge.

John Ellis

Ceist:

52 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money he has allocated or will allocate to Leitrim County Council for the reconstruction of Hartley Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim, in 1995. [5671/95]

Seán Doherty

Ceist:

54 Mr. Doherty asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money he has allocated in 1995 for work on Hartley Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim. [5673/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 52 and 54 together.

I understand that responsibility for Hartley Bridge is shared between Leitrim and Roscommon County Councils. It is a matter for these councils to carry out any works required and to meet the cost involved from their own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants for non-national roads provided annually by my Department. I have recently notified discretionary grant allocations totalling £1,402,000 and £2,114,000 to Leitrim and Roscommon County Councils, respectively, for this year.

Each council had an opportunity to submit an application in respect of Hartley Bridge under the 1995 EU co-financed scheme of specific grants for improvement works on non-national roads which have a significant and quantifiable economic impact. Leitrim County Council submitted 12 applications and Roscommon County Council 11 applications in respect of 1995 but neither council included a proposal relating to Hartley Bridge. It will be open to both councils to consider whether to submit proposals for this bridge in the future under this grants scheme.

The 1995 allocations for non-national roads notified to Leitrim and Roscommon County Councils include indicative grants amounting to £800,000 and £100,000, respectively, under the INTERREG II Community initiative for Border areas. It will be a matter for the Councils to decide whether to include Hartley Bridge in the proposals to be forwarded for consideration under this scheme.
