Byrne asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the present position of the Office of Public Works regarding aquaculture at Ballyteigue Bay, Duncormide, County Wexford; the process of consultation engaged in prior to the area being declared a special protection area in 1990; if aquaculture, particularly oyster cultivation, was well established prior to the designation; if he will review his objections to particular applications for licences in view of the fact that the 2.13 hectares affected comprises only 0.4 per cent of the designated area; his views on the apparent contradiction between the attitude of his Department and the encouragement offered to oyster growers at Ballyteigue Bay by other State agencies such an BIM; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
