Vol. 451 No. 3

Written Answers. - Communications Masts.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

38 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the reason so many communications masts which often interfere with the visual amenity of the area are being erected; and when this function can be performed by satellites. [6515/95]

The environmental impact of any communications mast is a matter in the first instance for the local authority concerned which gives or withholds planning permission under the relevant Planning Acts. My role is to ensure good radio frequency management. I have no function in relation to environmental amenity.

Despite ongoing development in satellite technology, it is unlikely that they will reduce the requirements for terrestrial communications services in the near future.
