66 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will introduce legislation to heavily tax plastic bags sold at retails outlets in view of their polluting effects on the environment and in order to encourage the use of alternatives; and, if not, the reason therefor. [7183/95]

I have no intention of introducing a tax on plastic bags at this time. I understand that measures generally to deal with packaging and packaging waste are being developed by the Minister for the Environment.
