Vol. 452 No. 5

Written Answers. - Animals Transport.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

104 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to welfare problems relating to the transport of animals within Ireland; and if he will provide statistics showing the number of animals injured or killed in transit within Ireland or dead on arrival at Irish abattoirs. [8199/95]

There are no statistics in my Department relating to the number of animals injured or killed in transit within Ireland or which are dead on arrival at Irish abattoirs. I am not aware of any particular welfare problems relating to such transport.

The Deputy will be aware that the Order dealing with the protection of animals during transport which I signed on 26 April 1995 applies to the transport of animals within Ireland where the journey exceeds 50 kilometres from the start of the journey to the place of destination.
