104 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to welfare problems relating to the transport of animals within Ireland; and if he will provide statistics showing the number of animals injured or killed in transit within Ireland or dead on arrival at Irish abattoirs. There are no statistics in my Department relating to the number of animals injured or killed in transit within Ireland or which are dead on arrival at Irish abattoirs. I am not aware of any particular welfare problems relating to such transport.
The Deputy will be aware that the Order dealing with the protection of animals during transport which I signed on 26 April 1995 applies to the transport of animals within Ireland where the journey exceeds 50 kilometres from the start of the journey to the place of destination.
