Vol. 452 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cross-Border Workers.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

40 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Finance the methods of tax treatment in relation to cross-Border workers that are in place in the 14 other countries of the European Union; and if he will make a statement on the matter of harmonising taxation for cross-Border workers. [8345/95]

A detailed reply to this question cannot be prepared in the short time available. However, the information is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

41 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Finance if he has received submissions in relation to the need to amend the 1976 Ireland-United Kingdom Double Taxation Agreement in view of the difficulties caused to cross-Border workers; if a working group has been established comprising officials of the Department of Finance and the Revenue Commissioners; if so, if the group has examined any submissions received; when he expects the group to report to him; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8369/95]

I have received a number of representations and submissions recently in regard to the situation affecting cross-Border workers including a detailed submission from the Irish European Cross-Border Workers' Association. These representations and submissions are being examined by the committee, made up of officials from my Department and the Revenue Commissioners, which I established to look into all the issues involved with regard to cross-Border taxation.

However, as has been stated many times before, this is a very complex area, involving two jurisdictions, and the examination of the issues will take some time. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that the committee would recommend any changes which would alter the treatment of cross-Border workers.
