Written Answers. - Special and Postal Voters Lists.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

152 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment the total cost of administering the special voters system and postal voting system in the 1991 local elections, and the total number of persons who availed of each facility in the 1991 local election, the 1992 general election and the 1994 European election. [8880/95]

The total number of electors entered on the special and postal voters lists in the years in question was as follows:

Year

Postal Voters List

1991/92

3,933

20,072

24,005

1992/93

3,756

19,528

23,284

1994/95

3,293

16,616

A breakdown is not available of the number of electors on each list who actually voted at the elections concerned. However, combined figures for electors who availed of special and postal voting facilities at these elections are included in returns sent to my Department by the various returning officers; these figures are being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.
The cost of conducting local elections is met by local authorities from their own resources. Information on the cost of the special and postal voting facilities at such elections is not available to my Department.
