Vol. 452 No. 8

Written Answers. - Milk Quota System.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

207 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he has satisfied himself with the mechanics of the milk quota system; the proposals, if any, he has to alter the quota system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8695/95]

I am of the view that the mechanisms of the quota system as currently operated in Ireland are by and large satisfactory. However, the system is in place for over ten years and I consider a review of the various arrangements and schemes is opportune. Such a review is underway in my Department and once complete, will provide a basis for discussion in the quota review group and for possible recommendations for changes to the system.

Ceist:

208 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the measures he is considering to give additional support to dairy farmers who demonstrate a commitment to milk production; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8696/95]

As the Deputy is aware, all the schemes which are in place under the milk quota system are purposely biased in favour of priority category producers, particularly smallscale producers who have demonstrated their commitment to dairying. It is my intention to continue this policy.
